Laura Engelberth conducted a short interview with this Japanese young man about his current life in Germany for the university's magazine.
Hi Masafumi Uemura. We hope you are enjoying your study time here in Germany and would like to ask you some questions about it!
Masafumi Uemura: Hello, thank you! Yes, I really appreciate my current study time overseas.
Why did you decide on having your practical training at a German university?
Uemura: I had to choose from the countries Germany, France, Finland, Sweden and the USA. The main reason I applied for an international internship is that I want to work and study in the field of practical engineering in a foreign country. In Germany I want to improve my English communication skills because I might work overseas in the future.
Where do you live at the moment and how do you get to the University?
Uemura: I am living in a student dorm in Bonn and I have to take the tram every day.
What do you like the most at our university or in Germany?
Uemura: Actually, I love the German food in the cafeteria – especially potatoes …
What is completely different to your own university in Japan? Is there anything you didn’t expect to find here?
Uemura: I noticed that German students go home as soon the last lesson ends. In Japan the universities are open 24 hours a day and it is quite normal, for students to be studying at the university until 11 p.m. or later.
Are you taking part in a German language course right now?
Uemura: In September 2014 I participated in a German language course for two weeks, but it is very difficult for me to remember grammar …
What do you do in your leisure time?
Uemura: I love travelling. I have already been to Switzerland and Milan – I want to visit as many places in Germany and Europe as I can!
That was our last question, thank you for your time. Good bye!
Uemura: No problem, it was a pleasure. Good bye!
